Lifestyle Changes to Help Improve Bad Cholesterol

Cholesterol, or lipoproteins, are fats that are attached to proteins. These fats need to be attached to the proteins for them to be able to be transported through the body. We have two forms of cholesterol—low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). We call LDL “bad” cholesterol because having too much LDL could lead to blockage in our arteries and cause heart problems.

When your LDL levels are rising, you must make lifestyle changes to counteract it. Here are some tips to improve bad cholesterol, reduce your LDL levels, and keep your heart healthy.

Eat Foods That Are Good For The Heart

Foods like herring, mackerel, salmon, flaxseeds, and walnuts have high omega-3 fatty acids. An omega-3-rich diet lowers blood pressure and doesn’t contribute negatively to your LDL levels.

Adding soluble fiber found in apples, pears, Brussel sprouts, oatmeal, and kidney beans helps reduce your body’s absorption of cholesterol into your bloodstream. Whey protein, when taken as a supplement, also helps in lowering LDL levels and blood pressure.

Avoid foods rich with trans fats, usually referred to on food labels as “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.” You can find it in commercial margarine, cookies, crackers, and cakes. Also, avoid saturated fats. Full-fat dairy products and red meat are rich in saturated fat.

Maintain A Healthy Weight

If you’re overweight or obese, the extra weight your body carries also contributes to high cholesterol. Cut down on sugars and snacks to help you lose weight. Regularly monitor your weight and track your progress. Shedding some extra pounds will help improve your health and will make you feel less sluggish and slow.

Establish a Daily Exercise Routine

Exercise is one of the most effective ways to manage cholesterol and lower your levels of LDL. Even if it’s difficult to find the time to hit the gym, simple things like walking to work or riding a bike can do wonders for your health. If you fit in at least thirty minutes of rigorous exercise in your daily routine, you will see dramatic results.

Quit Smoking

Smoking, whether through the traditional method or vaping, increases blood pressure and heart-related health risks. Having a lot of bad cholesterol and high blood pressure spell trouble for your heart. Abstaining from tobacco and other smoking substances will significantly reduce your risks of heart conditions.

Drink Less Alcohol

The occasional drink isn’t bad, but you should decrease your alcohol consumption if you’re a heavy drinker. Not only does too much alcohol increase your risk of heart problems, it’s also linked to various health disorders throughout the body. Limit your alcohol intake to ensure you stay healthy.
